History of Polk City
Polk City, Iowa, has a rich history that dates back to the mid-1800s. Originally inhabited by Native American tribes, the area saw an influx of European settlers in the mid-19th century with the expansion of the railroad. The town was formally established in 1872 and named after President James K. Polk.
Throughout its history, Polk City has primarily been an agricultural community, with farming playing a significant role in its economy. Over time, the town has grown and diversified, welcoming new residents and businesses.
One notable aspect of Polk City's history is its connection to Saylorville Lake. The construction of the Saylorville Dam on the Des Moines River in the 1960s led to the creation of the reservoir, which now offers recreational opportunities such as boating, fishing, and camping.
